What is Erythritol?

Erythritol is a natural product with a very unfortunate chemical sounding name. It should not be confused with artificial sweeteners.

It is a sugar alcohol (but contains neither sugar nor alcohol!) made by fermenting the natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables, in most cases it is made from corn. It is about 70% as sweet as sugar.

Erythritol has a very low Glycemic Index (GI) of only "1" and does not raise blood sugar levels. It is also very low in calories.

We all know sugar is bad for our teeth. Acid forming Sugar feeds the harmful bacteria allowing them to multiply, causing tooth decay. Sugar alcohols are quite different. They help balance the PH levels in our mouths, therefore helping to prevent tooth decay.

In fact, experiments with both Erythritol and Xylitol has proved that they can significantly reduce dental cavities and reduce plaque growth.

Sugar alcohols if consumed in large quantities can sometimes cause minor digestive problems such as diarrhoea and gas, but Erythritol is recognised as the easiest to digest. Like all fun things in life, it's all about moderation!

Another name for sugar alcohols is Polyols, which refers to their components. You can find more information on Polyols at https://polyols.org/.
